I would even be willing to teach sections from the Jensen books and give teachers real world application of strategies and ideas that they can use. I think it is an easy thing to talk about and be fervent at the time and when we walk away to forget about it and go about our business as we all have done. I think Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind would be a great resource to complete a book study over. I really liked the Solutions You Could Use from the chapter, “The Rules of Engagement”. I think if you discussed and practiced this books suggestions as a staff, the benefits would certainly outweigh the nay-sayers. Many teachers already potentially do many of these things and it is always reassuring to hear that you are doing is working and has research to back it up. This is a coalition that is backed by the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. If you sign up for this program for a 0-5 year old child, that child receives their own book in the mail every month. The books are age appropriate to the child, are chosen award winners, and include essential teaching themes. I believe early literacy is one of the most important aspects to a child. If they are not getting the exposure of books, they are already behind when they step foot into a kindergarten classroom. Most of the time, they stay behind throughout the rest of their public education. Even if a parent cannot read at least a child can still learn how to look at a book, turn pages, and infer from a picture, which is cementing very important concepts.
