How Ponyboy Saved Himself What if an essay could save a person’s life? This happened to the character Ponyboy in the book The Outsiders which was written by S.E. Hinton. Ponyboy is in a gang of greasers who are people who are not very accepted by society because they do not have very much money and they do not always follow the law. They have a lot of conflicts with a group called the Socials, Socs for short. One day Johnny has to Save Ponyboy from the Socs by killing one. After running from the police for a while Jonny dies trying to save children from a burning church. Ponyboy, who was a good student began to have his grades drop along with sending his life downhill. At the end of the book Ponyboy starts his grade-saving English paper with the same sentence as the one that begins the book. The first and last sentences function in the novel as the beginning of Ponyboy’s grade saving and life changing English paper. In the book The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy writes a grade-saving English paper that begins to put his life back on track. The English essay turns out to be the entire book. Hinton Ponyboy’s grade-saving English paper saves his life by saving his grade and keeping him in school. Of the Greasers Ponyboy is one of the best at in-school performance. Because of the tragedy with Johnny he had begun to lose his focus on school and therefore, his grades dropped. Ponyboy knows that he has a bad grade in the class as shown in this quote, “I knew I was flunking out in that class, but golly, I couldn’t help it.” (Hinton 169). This quote indicates that he was hopeless to get a good grade in the class, but as he begins his essay he realizes that he could got his grade up by writing an essay about his experiences with Johnny’s death.
