The Effects of the Lack of Play on Learning: The first few years are the most crucial for brain development and research has shown that stimulating play and learning experiences for children help to build connections in the brain called neural pathways which are essential for cognitive development. Play is one of the main ways in which children interact with one another and form relationships. Lack of social interaction can lead to a child not being able to learn how to co-operate, develop confidence as well as problem solving and thinking skills.…

My parents told me I could only go if we were being driven, but I went anyway. It was scary crossing the street, mostly because we did not cross at the crosswalk. We were too lazy to walk down the neighborhood and cross at the light.…

As a child in elementary school my favorite time of the day was recess and lunchtime, like any other child in my fourth grade class. I remember learning how to tell time just so I could tell when I was about to be called for bus riders. At lunch my friends would mix their food together and dare each other to eat it, getting all of us at the table in trouble at lunch by Mrs. Cothrin, my fourth grade teacher. Overtime, there have been several theorists who have made valuable contributions in how play impacts young children (“The Importance of Play,” n.d.). One theorist, Jean Piaget felt that play is the assimilation product of a child making new information fit into an existing structure that they already know and can relate to. Because Piaget felt that children cannot find a connection to new information without having to change their mental structure, he did not feel that play provides children with learning. Instead, Piaget suggested that play was a way in which a child could practice what they have learned (“The Importance of Play,”…
