How Perception Changed My Life

Change is inevitable. There’s no doubt about it. Change is a part of nature, just like the leaves change in autumn and the flowers bloom in the spring. Sometimes change is a good thing, other times not so much. I can remember being three years old, watching cartoons on television. Now, I am nineteen and I am a sophomore in college. Time passed slowly and all at once, and I am a changed person because of it. Looking back on my life, I experience a color wheel of emotions that are all worth it plus more. A lot of this has to do with the way my perception has changed since I was younger. Perception is defined as “the active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, and activities” (Wood, 2014).

Last year at this time, I was just getting settled into college life. I was excited and anxious because everything was so new to me. I had so much energy that couldn’t escape fast enough. Fast forward to present day and I am still excited and anxious because my classes are much different.

I didn’t see her coming, but now I can’t imagine her leaving. We met in an elevator a week before freshman year started. She wore all black, had bug-eyed sunglasses on, and chewed her gum like it was going out of style. She said she hated elevators, so I asked her why she didn’t take the stairs. She said she didn’t even realize the building had stairs. At first, I thought she was ditzy and dramatic. Then, we began going to classes together and eating lunch together during our breaks. I have come to realize since then that she is so far from what I thought she was. She is actually very intelligent and can argue her point like a lawyer. As one of my best friends, I can say that she has definitely shattered the expectations I had of her. Like chapter three states, “Expectations affect our perceptions in a variety of communication situations” (Wood,

However, whether these changes are a progression or a step backwards will depend upon many elements. In an ever changing world, there are some things that will forever seem to be the same; the sky has been and shall be blue, people have and will constantly fall in and out of love, the fear of the unknown has been experienced by many, and many more will experience such a feeling, and an orchestra has always been seated that way it has - string instruments in the front with brass, woodwinds, and percussion in the back. Various things that function in a certain way, and continue to function in that certain way, grow to become the norm accepted by many over the years that pass. We get so used to the way everyday things work, that if they were to change, it would be so drastic and result in a sense of unconformity in many. According to Courtney…

Change does not always have to be chased. In fact, change can happen without purpose or without realization, slipping under one's nose until it is too late, and the change has already happened. Small changes, preferences in music and movies, the way one wears their hair, the mannerisms in which they speak, these can all occur without realizing they have. "The bottom line is, time is a powerful force. It transforms our preferences.…

Imagine that everyone experienced a time in their life that is so complex and so random that it was equally complex and random to theorize. This fundamental idea begins to explain emerging adulthood. Emerging adulthood is a time period where there is no established paradigm or conflict that needs to be resolved and it is quite different for every individual (Arnett). Arnett defines the age range between 18 through 25 as a period where individuals find themselves experimenting and exploring many things including ideas such as love, work, and a general view of the world. This period is becoming more commonly acknowledged among people due to more and more countries being industrialized.…

I come from a family that has little to nothing. We live by what people would say “paycheck to paycheck.” So we’ve done things that may seem silly or weird to others, but for me, I like to think that it’s something funny to tell in the future. Which is true because now I can make jokes and use some of my mistakes or things like that to make people laugh or to grow from it.
