Since 1995, cell phones have been a norm for society. Today, people are constantly using these devices for work, getting ahold of family and friends, and to play the ninety-nine cent games they are paying for to keep themselves entertained while sitting in school or meetings. Cell phones have changed dramatically throughout the years going from flip phones with giant antennas that held 5 contacts, to touch screen camera phones that can hold as much data as a person needs. Cell phones are the norm of todays society, but people are starting to use these devices more than they really should.

Nancy Baym states in the article, “the more you communicate with people using devices, the more likely you are to communicate with those people face to face.” This may be true, but when meeting in person for the first time, there is a good chance it will be awkward because he or she have never heard their voice or if they use sarcasm, they may not catch on to it as easily. Some may say that the internet is also helping with the dating websites people use. People meet on dating websites all the time and some of them do end up working out. However, these dating websites aren’t going to tell you everything about the person so when meeting for the first time, a person may be caught off guard and feel very uncomfortable the whole date. These websites are also scary because people don’t know if the profile picture they use is actually them. The internet and social media definitely do have some advantages.
