Arnold (a.k.a Junior) is the witty and colorful protagonist of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian. The first thing Arnold refers to is that he is a hydrocephalic (1.1). However, instead of referring to his disorder as the name given to it by the doctors of the scientific world, he instead refers to it as “water on the brain” (1.1), immediately capturing the reader’s attentions. In his time at the all white school, Junior struggles with trying to bridge his native culture while trying to fit in at the all white school. To illustrate his views, Junior shows a picture of a white person versus a Native American, to which he writes things for whites such as, "A bright future," "Positive role models," and "Hope" while for himself and other Indians he shows, "A vanishing past," "A family history of diabetes and cancer," and the "bone-crushing reality". To me a hero is a person who risked their lives or everything they to save someone or something. In my opinion, Johnny was the biggest hero in the novel The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton. Johnny was abused at home and then got jumped but that never stopped him from saving those little kids in the burning church. As the boys were on their way back to the church from Dairy Queen they saw that the church was up in flames, so they ran in to help little kids that were trapped. This just shows that how courageous Johnny is to save some little kids that he had never even met before.…

Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian touches on many issues faced by many modern-day Native Americans throughout their lives, one such issue being poverty, which appears to be present in most Indian families. The sort of poverty that plagues the Spokane reservation is the same kind that has plagued Native Americans for generations. One possible root cause for the situation would be that the current natives on the reservation see that their parents couldn’t do anything to rid themselves of poverty, so they lose hope and, as a result, perpetuate the problem. While the degree of poverty in Junior’s Indian reservation is extreme, the underlying struggles that come with such a financial predicament are to be made note…

Now on the surface this may seem like a step backwards as to why people don’t want to go to college, but it’s a reason in and of itself. Some people have a path in life they want to go down, and college may not lead them any farther or closer to their goal so they decide not to go as they find no use for it at the moment. I myself am very capable of going to college, yet the way my career works doesn’t require that I go to a college, only that I provide for myself and my family with enough time in my day to pursue my passion as an artist. Not every reason for not going to college is purely logical or explainable. Sometimes it’s as simple as, “I’m not going to college because I just don’t want to go to…
