The Threats Of Netflix

Superior Essays
We spoke of how Netflix is able to stay on top of their competitions but there are certain threats that could bring Netflix down. Even though Amazon has their customer pay a nominal fee for newer content on movies or shows, they have the rights to bring a television show episode the next day after it has been aired on TV. Such cases are Big Bang Theory, Arrow, and The Flash. Once it has been aired on TV, customers are able to see that same episode where Netflix would have to wait a year before releasing the last season of a television show. Hulu has the same idea as Amazon but it is a free internet site with several advertisements during the show. It was a good way for individuals to backdoor a content as soon as it has been released. Lastly, YouTube has been known for allowing individuals upload almost any content on their YouTube channel. There will be times where these channels will show television shows and movies that may have come out. This was an ultimate back door for individuals who choose not to pay for any fees or monthly subscriptions. Now the CEO of YouTube has change that policy to pay as you watch movies to stream movies and television shows.

With Reed Hastings leading the charge, Netflix was able to capitalize on the internet and subscription based system that help create and innovate the plans of what we see today and the future of tomorrow. In the year 2002, Netflix had only about 500,00 members in the United States to about 60 million viewers worldwide by the end of 2014. A huge influx of members in a little over a decade of time. Hastings had a vision due to a late fee of Apollo 13 movie and has not lost that vision. It could be said that Netflix has truly change the way families and individuals view their favorite movies and television shows at the comfort of their own

Two very popular services offered are Direct TV and Netflix, and both have proved to satisfy their customers in some way or another, but at different costs. In fact, when it comes to television entertainment, families spend their money unwisely without pondering the pros and the cons of each service. One gains subscriptions through proviing pre recoded shows to watch at the consumer’s leisure while other provides live content and thrives of commercials and the advertisement of other products. The whole business model of both parties would have to change drastically in order for this relationship to be successful. As I alluded to previously the two would have to compromise between the implementation of advertisements. YouTube’s move comes the day after the New York Times published an article detailing the Federal Trade Commission’s concern over the blurry line between advertisements and endorsements on internet celebrity platforms. Tangentially, the Times reported that the average YouTube "star" — someone with 3 to 7 million followers — can command nearly $190,000 on average for a single sponsored post placed on their channel. DeFranco disputed this amount, calling it "somewhat bullshit" and pointing out that subscriber numbers don’t automatically translate to user engagement (which generally means "interacting" with a video by commenting on it, sharing it, etc.) — you might subscribe to a channel but never watch it again. YouTube’s decision is a potentially troubling one, especially for the large sector of YouTube that DeFranco labels the "middle tier" of YouTube vloggers — what the…

Without the pressure a company like Verizon’s Netflix could drop in performance but would feel no pressure because there is no rival companies to take customers away. If there was more competition, yes the performance might get a little better, but the companies like Netflix already strive to make their performance better or else users will get tired and bored of it, making them lose revenue. Also the number one reason why competition would be bad is because then it will turn the internet into something like cable tv and then…

For example; online shopping, self-checkout, online education, communication, and even the way we travel. Even though McDonaldization costs thousands of people their jobs, McDonaldization helps businesses thrive because it’s far less expensive, with more control means there’s fewer human errors, and more is done in lesser time. McDonaldization is a term use by sociologist, George Ritzer in his book titled The McDonaldization of Society (1993).…

3.4 Discussion of Results The evidence is clear; large cable conglomerates like TWC, now called Charter Spectrum since its latest merger, act with monopoly power to increase prices and no one is stepping in to regulate them. With only one cable provider in most areas due to prohibitive capital-intensive entry barriers, the government has allowed the cable industry to function as natural monopolies, with limited government restrictions. With free reign on price increases, TWC camouflages many increases by burying them in equipment charges and add-on service fees. In addition, they bundle their services so that the price of selecting individual services versus the bundled service is cost prohibitive for the consumer, increases revenue for…

The top two competitors for Netflix are Amazon Prime with about 13% of the American household market share and Hulu Plus which has about 6.5% of the American market. With 35% of American households having broadband access and zero streaming services, there is no wonder the giant cable company Tier Warner offers HBO Go as a streaming service. Let 's not overlook the fact that there are still plenty of websites that offer pirated movies and TV shows for free with a quick search engine look. Hulu also offers a free service, along with Veoh, Crackle, and UStream (chat online while you watch live video streams). When Netflix entered the European market it "immediately found itself navigating fierce competition from local streaming services and pressure from new apps that make watching pirated movies and shows easier than ever before."…
