How My Perspective Changed: Wonder By R. J Palacio

Being a middle school education major one specific text comes into mind that my perspective changed is, Wonder by R.J Palacio. When I first read this book, I was in high school helping my younger sister who was going into middle school and was assigned this book for her summer reading. I did not understand why this book was chosen and why it was a must read before entering her years of middle school. After reading this book for the second time in college and analyzing it, I fell in love, I actually participated in the Cormier Symposium here at Fitchburg State last year because I truly think it is a staple for incoming middle school children! I think my perspective changed on the book because I changed. I grew up and realized

In the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the author writes from August’s perspective showing the reader the truth about his difficult life. When August hopes that he finds a magic lamp, he would wish that he had: “[...] a normal face that no one would notice at all” (Palacio 3). This shows that August strongly dislikes his face because it makes him look different and he chooses not to look on the bright side. The reader feels upset for August because they do not want him to feel that he has to change his face just so other people will appreciate him. When Halloween comes around, August gets high-fived by a kid who happens to be wearing the same costume as him and wonders if: “[...] he would have ever done that if he’d known it was me under the…

    1. THEME: The theme in the realistic fiction story Wonder by R.J Palacio is, it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside it’s the inside that counts. I know that’s probably the most cliche saying ever but, it’s true especially in the book Wonder. I say this because the main character August isn’t very well liked at first by anyone but Summer, because of the way he looks, this is especially sad because August has an amazing personality according to Jack, Jack says “... if all the guys in the fifth grade were lined up against a wall and I got to choose anyone I wanted to hang out with, I would chose August.” I think Jack says this because, August may not be the most popular kid in the grade but, he is a great friend to have despite his face.…

The novel that I read is called “ Wonder” and it’s written by R.J Palacio. This book is about a boy who’s name is August and he’s ten years old. He’s about to enter the real world and actually go to a public school because he’s always been homeschooled. The only thing is that this character isn’t like any other kid, he has a deformed face, which leads to him being anxious and nervous to enter the fifth grade at Beecher Prep. He has gotten used to all the starring or the type of facial expressions that people make once they see him.…

“A Wonder book” Nathan Hawthorn’s children story A Wonder Book is based on the story of Pandora’s box, but it also seems like it is similar to classic bible story of Adam and Eve. This book treats naughtiness in a good and bad way, a perfect mixture of both. Primrose, one of many siblings, is the self proclaimed “naughty one”. She is a gossiper and her older cousin wants to tell each child a story about someone who is just as naughty as Primrose. Cousin Eustace beings the tale by stating “...and be all as still as so many mice.…

I believe that the person who changed the most in this book was the main character August who was born with distorted facial features. I believe that he has changed the most from feeling let out this whole life and now feels like he's a normal person and not just so kid who's has medical problems. He had been homeschooled his whole life and when he first went to school that changed him cause he believed that everyone was going to hate him. When he met his friend Summer who also sit with him at lunch and she told him that he was perfect and did not need to change. Another thing that changed him was when his so called best friend Jack was talking behind his back for a few weeks and when jack and August were partners for a project jack went…

Wonder by R.J. Palacio is a great book because of all the empathy and different perspectives it gives the reader. This book is very interesting since it would take the reader through a process of how a boy has to face all of these obstacles in his daily life and is now coming to a school for the first time. The main character, August Pullman, is a fairly good character with good behavior and doesn’t really like to hurt people but not too relatable to most readers due to the fact that most people don’t have conditions like August does. I would recommend this book to people that want to feel empathetic and see how a boy deals with obstacles that people don't really think about. The best moment in the book is when Jack (August’s best friend) punches…

Ï think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives” (Palacio). In the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, the theme is to not judge a book by its cover. It is hard to fit in when you are not what society considers ¨normal¨, so we should never judge someone based on their imperfections because we all have them. This book takes place in Manhattan, New York where a lot of judgement happens. The inspiration that struck R.J. Palacio to write this book was because of something that happened with her children.…

There comes a moment in many of our lives when we need to stand up for who we are. In the movie “Wonder” by Stephen Chbosky, the main character Auggie struggles fitting in with others because of the way he looks. Auggie's parents believe enrolling him in school will help him make new friends and learn how to show the world he can do anything with the right mindset. Throughout the beginning of the trailer Auggie struggles with these things but as time goes on he shows his schoolmates and parents that he is this great kid that can do whatever he strives to achieve. The trailer for the upcoming film Wonder is effective in grabbing a viewer's interest by the way it uses color to establish the feelings of the main character and the environment around…

The books and articles I read this summer taught me to take common topics and change the way I look at them. They covered a wide variety of subjects such as adult life, capital punishment, school shootings, and how my own mind works. They all received critical acclaim and it is obvious why. All the authors cause their readers to question the way they have been looking and going about things. David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech to Kenyon College graduates has received praise because of his ability to break the set pattern of commencement speeches.…
