How My Dad Changed My Life

There have been several events in my past that have personally impacted my life that shows how lives can be changed based on a deviant behavior related to drugs and alcohol. First, I want to say that I love my mother dearly. Unfortunately, some bad things happened as I was growing up, but these things have made me who I am today. Drug and alcohol use was a constant in my house. If it was not my real dad, then it was my step-dad. I do not know how personal I am supposed to get in this post, but I can remember countless times where my step-dad would get drunk and would then physically and mentally beat-up both my mother and older brother. I guess you could say that I was lucky that I was never physically abused like they were; however, I was mentally abused by him during his drunken state of mind. When I think about the past, I can still recall one of the worse times when I found my mom laying on the kitchen floor with blood all over her face and her hair on the ground. I do not have a good relationship with my step-dad even if he has “mellowed” out on his drinking. Even though these events were tragic to a child my age at the time, I feel that it has made me a better person. Today, I have a personal relationship with God because my best friend’s family took me to church every Sunday and Wednesday, I have a strong work ethic, and I do not drink to the point where I am drunk and inebriated. I also feel as if I have learned to be a better parent to my own daughter by not repeating the “mistakes” that my mother had made.
It has been debated if alcoholism is really a disease. Do you feel that it is a disease? Why or why not?
