I was born in San Francisco to a single mother, and I have never known anything different. My mother provided an incredible life for me, for which I am eternally grateful. At the age of eleven my mother decided it would be financially best to relocate to Casper, Wyoming, where she would have the help of her family to raise me. Although the move was extremely difficult for both of seeing that we created friendships and bonds with people that we would no longer see as often, my mother has never made a decision she didn’t think was best for both of us. My mother always puts my well-being first which has given me my love of helping others.…

Service has always been a big part of my life. I have always been involved in my church’s youth group, the Pioneers of Mary. The Pioneers are always doing acts of service, and I love getting involved to help others. Last Christmas, the group and I went caroling to some lonely elders in a nursing home. I know that my time with the senior citizens gave them some Christmas joy and made them feel very happy.…

Throughout this semester I performed a total of 12 hours of service. In March, I completed 2 hours of service at the Friends for the Future Phone-a-thon. At the Phone-a-thon, I was able to give back to our school by connecting with and thanking people who generously donated to Friends for the Future. Afterwards, I performed the Spiritual Work of Mercy, pray for the living, by praying for the people who donated to our school. I chose this service because I love giving back to my school.…

When I was in 3rd grade, the only woman who had ever taken care of me passed away due to cancer. My Grandma took care of my mother and I from the time I was born and continued to care for me after my mom moved away. Our lives weren't very luxurious. I once had the privilege in cleaning the fieldhouse floors with the zamboni. This job made me realize all the hard work done behind the scenes to keep our school clean for all students, faculty, and guests. In conclusion, I may have not went and done 100 service hours, but in the short amount of time I was volunteering for my hours I grew a lot in my faith for God as well as bettering myself as a…

A Ragged Surrey Remembering Grandma “Papa was a good man,” said Grandmother, taking a pinch of snuff and placing it between lip and gum. Her voice was clear and concise, her eyes sad and misty as she talked about him. “No one could ever fill his shoes nor take his place in my heart. They wouldn’t no man fit to wipe his Boots,” she said with a huff.…

To be honest at first I thought that the 60 hours we had to turn in by senior year was just going to be a hassle and it was unnecessary. But the help of my mom I figured out that helping the community is easier than I thought. My idea for my Christian service hours was to join Jack and Jill of America. It is a leadership and community service group for African-American children within the Twin Cities. I joined Jack and Jill my freshman year and it is brought so many new experiences and so many great people into my life I would not have done anything different.…

I was in Pohnpei in April for four weeks, during which time I taught in the Bible school four hours a day, five days a week; taught a cell group Bible study one evening in town each week; as well as preached in the church on Sundays (I was preaching six days a week with one day to rest). I have been returning frequently to Pohnpei, and this year was my tenth anniversary since my first visit to Pohnpei in 2002! They have been like my spiritual children in the Lord. (I returned again to Pohnpei in May 2013, and on Mothers’ Day they honored me as their spiritual mother in the church and ministry! That was the first time I’ve ever been honored on Mothers’ Day!)…

As far back as I can remember first impressions were of great significance because it’s during this time that one forms a mental image or an opinion about someone that they’ve just recently met. However, if first impressions depicted the correct image or true character of someone it would mean that the first impression that most people got after meeting my grandmother couldn’t be further from the truth. My grandmother would come across as cold or distant at first but then her true character would come out as she warmed up to people.…
