It took thirteen years, from the time I stumbled into kindergarten until the time I gleefully grabbed my diploma. My teachers spent 7 hours a day, five days a week, stuffing my noggin with knowledge. I invested countless hours of my time and energy into getting that diploma. However, throughout all thirteen of those years, never once did I question how much energy my school invested in me. Every year our nation spends more than $8 billion dollars on energy bills for our K-12 schools (Global Green USA). The best way to cut down on this huge bill is to convert schools that still run on fossil fuels, also known as conventional schools, into eco-friendly schools, most commonly referred to as green schools. Many people didn’t know much about alternative energy sources until 2006 when Ale Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ shed some light on the environmental impacts of using fossil fuels as opposed to green energy. However, our past was actually filled with green energy, “Californians were entranced by the potential of wave power in the early 1900s, and solar water heaters used to be common in the early 1900s” (Walsh). Much of this was then switched over to fossil fuel energy because of how cheap it used to be. But times have changed, and as we quickly use up our reservoirs of fossil fuels, their costs have increased, and it is time to make the switch back to green energy. Conventional energy is so expensive that it is currently the second highest operating expenditure for schools after personnel costs, (Global Green USA). Districts are suffering, trying to cope with tight budgets, and not being able to afford other necessary resources for their schools. The prices of fossil fuels will continue to increase as they run out, therefore tightening already overly restrictive budgets. Experts estimate that at today 's consumption rates, known global supplies of oil and natural gas will be depleted within decades, (Chea). This is why action needs to be taken
