Fashion has a huge impact on people’s decisions and since it’s constantly changing, more products are created and people want to buy the new stuff so they sell or donate their old stuff. Eventually, stuff has to go to the trash and the more stuff people have the more trash that is created. “According to the EPA, since 1960, the solid trash disposal per person per day in the United States has exploded from 2.68 pounds to 4.43 pounds, generating more than 250 million tons per year” (Lewis). That is an alarming amount of trash that is harming the planet. His idea of exorbitant wealth was more of a physical and expansionist detriment. Thoreau had the ideology that gaining land was the source of “quiet desperation”, as people would have to work long hard hours in the field and would be disconnected from others. As society has changed so has wealth, as it is now determined by the items owned to make living convenient. A current New York Times article masterfully articulated the way society has pressured us to feel the need to purchase things as soon as we have money. It has been found that people tend to buy in excess when they feel as though their success was only temporary.…

The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

Most of us can agree with this statement and acknowledge that they feel the most happiness in these conditions, but what exactly is happiness? “For if happiness is what people strive for, one needn’t waste time trying to figure out what makes people happy. One must only look at what people do” (Porter 460). We choose to work and make money to benefit our happiness.…
