Mobile phone data transmission has several different ways of getting data from one point to the next. There have been several different standards developed over the years, which has changed the way we communicate. In this paper I will go over the history of mobile transmission, the different cellular access technologies, mobile broadband technologies, the top mobile phone companies, and the future of mobile phone transmission. My goal for this paper is to get a better understanding of how mobile transmission has evolved and where it will go in the future. Also get a better understanding of how the major phone companies transmit there data and voice while constantly upgrading the data speeds. The final thing I want to learn from writing this

GSM is the oldest method that is still used today, it started back in 1982 in Europe by the conference of postal and telecommunications administrations (CEPT). Just about 80 percent of the world uses GSM to make their phone calls all over the world. The GSM network makes it to where users have more coverage for international roaming and is considered to be a world phone. Also using a GSM net work requires you to use a subscriber identity module (SIM) card in the United States; this card is your identity for your phone. When using a SIM card you are able to switch phones by switching the card from your current phone to your new phone, this then transfer your identity to the new device. Cell phones send packets back n forth between the tower and the cell phone, in those packets includes data and voice in case of a phone during the transmission. For the mobile broadband technology the packets are for the use of emails, applications that use the internet, streaming videos or music. There are several different types of mobile broadband methods that we have used over the evolution of mobile transmission, they are CDPD, EV-DO, HSDPA, HSPA, HSPA (plus), and LTE. Cellular digital packet data (CDPD) is a method of transmitting packets or little things of data in a reliable way. This allows mobile users to transmit and receive data and voice as long as they are in cellular coverage. CDPD is a method that is cost effective, reliable, and fast. CDPD uses a method called channel hopping, the way this works is if a mobile device wants to transmit then it looks for an open channel. Once an open channel is found and a voice isn’t in place then data will start to transmit. If for some reason a voice call is needed to be transmitted then the data will stop and the voice will take priority over data
