During the early stages of marriage, high levels of intimacy rarely continue. Marital satisfaction and interpersonal intimacy normally decline after the first year or two. Compared to men, women seem to have less satisfaction within the early stage of marriage, particularly when they suddenly encounter sex-typed roles after the birth of a child and when their intimacy needs are not being met. During the transition to parenthood, individuals who are in the middle part of adulthood report “having less time for friends than at any other time in their lives.” (Page 166) People who are in late adulthood tend to experience a revival in intimacy after adolescent children are launched. In an fMRI study, researchers discovered that men typically show more activity in brain regions that are associated with visual processing. When the male subjects were told to look at a photo of their beloved, “men tended to show more positive activity in a brain region associated with penile erection.” (Page 111) When female subjects looked at a photo of their dearly loved, they displayed more activity in “the body of the caudate nucleus and the septum,” which are brain regions that are linked with motivation and attention. (Page 113) Some areas of the septum are also related with the processing of emotion. Women must “compute a partner’s ability to protect and provide.” (Page 114) Ultimately, women are able to compute these two things when they recall memories and register emotions. When women recall memories and register their emotions, they inform themselves about their feelings and collect information into patterns. Men are more likely to select women who display visual signs of youth and attractiveness. On average, men throughout the world marry women who are three years younger than they are. A survey that consisted of 800 people concluded that “American women sought partners who offered financial security twice as frequently as men did.” (Page 114) Women desire men who are educated, ambitious, wealth, respect, status and position.” Women are also attracted to tall men;
