Another practice that can be employed to facilitate meditation is to focus on a single object. The object can be anything. I most commonly picture a single candle lit in a dark room with nothing else around. I watch it flicker as thoughts pass through my mind, aware of them but paying no attention. This semester we listened to a mediation circuit by Deepak Chopra, the messages explored all kinds of topics from love and acceptance to things like opening your heart chakra. This meditation really provided me with a calm and relaxing outlet and strangely enough, each meditation topic came at the right time. Specially I can think back to a couple days where I was doubting my abilities greatly and was really questioning if I was meant to be here, and that same day we learned about self acceptance and being enough just the way we are. With being in such a subjective field, we as performers are constantly second guessing our abilities, and meditation has become something of a helpful tool to use whenever I start to feel overwhelmed. Something that we have done a few times in class but more specifically in ‘A Chorus Line’ was standing in a circle holding hands, and taking 4 deep breaths.…

Mindfulness formal practices, however, forced me to slow down, even if just for twenty minutes and focus on the here and now, which helped me to appreciate to a greater extent what was going on in my life at the current point in time. This being said, my mindfulness formal practices have not always been easy.
