November 2, 2016 How Mass Media can Changes a Person’s Outlook, Even in Negative Ways
Media is a large part of day-to-day lives. Defined by webster’s dictionary, mass media is best defined as, a medium of communication (as newspapers, radio, or television) that is designed to reach the mass of the people —usually used in plural. Since the 1940’s, when televisions became a common place in homes across the country, there has been more media violence being shown on television. Not only is media violence exposed in adult television shows and movies, it is also common to see it in children’s television shows and movies. Increasingly graphic images are shown daily in the news from current conflicts occurring around the world like Iraq and Afghanistan and also from local news like riots. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) wrote on this issue, “These images can confuse and frighten children and, similarly to overly violent movies and video games, frequent viewing of news coverage of traumatic events may cause children to become aggressive, desensitized to violence, and have less empathy for others.” This statement is very accurate because most people do not realize how much violence is really shown on the news. Although parents want to educate their children on what is going on in the world and country that they live in, it is important to realize that this knowledge of such violent behavior can negatively affect their children and how they grow up

Most people believe that exposure to violent media has negative effects on children but there are also those who believe that it can be beneficial to some as well. Amanda Hermes, a freelance writer- mainly about children’s health, green living, healthy eating, states in her essay, “Children’s Exposure to TV Violence & Aggressive Behavior” that watching violence and aggression can lead to acting violent and aggressive. In contrast, Gerard Jones, in his essay “Violent Media is Good for Kids” argues that violent media can help shy children break out of their shells, grow in self-confidence, and become more creative. Although both Hermes and Jones present reasonable arguments, I believe that Jones had the stronger argument. Jones’ argument was stronger because he established himself as being a credible source, included real life evidence, and included a personal anecdote about the benefit of violent media in his life.…

Often times the screen is on channels such as, FOX News or FX, rather than an educational PBS or Nickelodeon. The mass medias ability to attract spectators for hours at a time, influence viewers to purchase products, and portray characters in roles based on stereotype and prejudice, are only a few of the negative affects the media demonstrates to children viewers who watch their screens religiously. Pediatrics & Child Health’s article wrote an article titled, Impact of Media Use on Children and Youth, which regarded their belief that extensive media exposure should be an issue discussed with a child’s Pediatrician. The article says “The influence of the media on the psychosocial development of children is profound. Thus, it is important for physicians to discuss with parents their child’s exposure to media and to provide guidance on age-appropriate use of all media, including television, radio, music, video games and the Internet.”…

Contrary to popular belief and conventional wisdom, violence in the media is way less harmful than what people think. Since the early days of motion pictures, violence has been overly criticized by many generations of adults generally and parents specifically. But after reading “Violent Media Is good for Kids” by Gerard Jones and how interesting is his take on this matter, the use of violence in the media makes much more sense. The discussion about good and evil, and what’s the proper way to settle the score between them has always been an obsession for mankind, no matter what age or ethnicities they are, but the common way it’s done in pop culture is by the use violence which can be seen as just fiction in the media, but ultimately impacts…

In the modern world, violent media is one of many issues that concerns parents, teachers, and society on the effects of violent media on the developing generations. For example, there has been fear in our society that children exhibited to violent media will grow to become violent, creating a future for a violent society. In “Violent Media Is Good for Kids” Gerard Jones claims that When we try to protect our children from their own feelings and fantasies, we shelter them not against violence but against power and selfhood. Jones points out that children need violent entertainment to explore the inescapable feeling that they’ve been taught to deny and to reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, more complex, and more resilient selfhood. Gerard states that children need violent entertainment. Violent entertainment helps kids meet their emotional needs, helps kids not feel powerless, and creates a tool to muster their rage. To follow up, he states that modern kids are far more likely to grow up too passive, too distrustful, of themselves, and too easily manipulated.…

Television contributes to more adverse health and behavioral outcomes than positive. When adolescents are entertained by reality shows, music videos, and advertisements the possibility of negative exposure increases. A lot of these types of entertainment options can very easily lead to inappropriate and dysfunctional behaviors. The advertising of negativity contributes to deviant behavior (Browne & Hamilton-Giachritsis, 2005).…

Everything that youngsters see or hear in the media early on in their lives affects them in some way. According to Oakes, “Numerous credible studies have documented at least short-term of various media forms on a wide variety of outcomes, including cognitive development, aggression, violence, sleep disturbances, and physical activity.” It is difficult to set a definitive effect media violence has on youngsters. There are multiple reason for this, but the main issue is that terms like “violence” and “aggression” are not easily categorized. To a child, almost any kind of conflict, such as arguments or disagreements in a television show, or losing in a video game can be classified as aggressive to a young child.…
