All together I spent 14 years as a counselor. I spent 9 years at Lane Tech High School in Illinois and 5 years at Iowa City.
2. Where did you get your education and what was it in?
I received my B.A from the University of iowa in Psychology and received a M.A in School counseling from Arizona state.
3. Do you participate, coach, or manage any extra curricular activities?
I was a Baseball coach 5 years at Lane tech while being a School Counselor however, left coaching when I started establishing a family.

How is the school-counseling program designed to meet the needs of every student?
Try to push to meet with all students
Typically, we have multiple large meetings with freshmen, often have contact with juniors who are in their “planning” year, we send newsletters to students and parents, and we have a scheduling meeting with every student at least once during the school year.

So we try to focus on ethical standards but acknowledge on a case by case basis. One student for instance had trouble with his mandatory PE requirement so he could graduate. But he had a special circumstance where his mother was Bipolar and he had an Autistic brother. So he would constantly miss classes to care protect his brother. The school policy was that he needed another full year of PE to graduate however, we thought ethically it would be in the best interest of the student if we worked with him for that requirement.
11. What profession development did you participate in to enhance your skills
I have attended the National Board Certification For teachers and counselors. One of the Facets of it consisted submitting portfolios and videos. Other professional development activities that we have he is inviting guest speaker to introduce and/or educate our counselors on ways be more accommodating toward different student needs.
12. What are the current challenges facing the professional school counselor program? Being kind of a catch all staff member in the building and moving away from having a sufficient amount of time with students. Having to do more administrative work and opposed to time with students.
13. With all the stresses that come with the program, how do handle self-care?
You just need to know how to keep busy, exercise, take care of things at home, and have time for your hobbies. Also
