Creating a memorial can be complicated. When choosing a way to symbolize an important part of history, there are multiple factors that play an important role. A group or agency should consider the cost and properly symbolizing the event or person within the creation of the monument. The cost of a dedication is a necessary aspect.…
Imagine you’re 600 feet in the air, looking down at the little world below you. The itty bitty cars and teeny tiny people. It is hard to believe you were once down there, that the world shrunk or that you grew. The Mississippi River and beyond on one side, St Louis on the other. That's right, you're at the top of the western hemisphere's tallest monument, the Gateway Arch!…
As people stroll through the park and see the monument, they would remember the impact Columbus had in history and how inspiring he was. The monument of Columbus would not be viewed as something meant to memorialize him if it was placed near a dumpster or an asylum. The location of a monument is essential to successfully memorialize a person or an…
Memorializing is something that has remained a significant piece of our lives, something we as a society have seen done since as long as we can remember. The need to commemorate events and people can be complex in the sense that there are various reasons to create monuments and memorials, whether it be to recognize accomplishments or show respect to deep sacrifice. No matter what the central reason to create a monument is, it's imperative that it remains meaningful. In order to create a meaningful and significant monument, there are multiple factors to first consider. It's necessary for a monument's purpose and significance to be thought of first, to ensure that the monument should even be built in the first place.…
The most fascinating fact I learned today was about the Jefferson Memorial’s location in Washington, D.C. Even though this building’s placement looks very ordinary, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the placement of the memorial, and the historical connection with the other testaments to our founding fathers. Back in the 1900s, there was a commision to create a memorial honoring our 38th President Theodore Roosevelt’s contributions to American History. There was even a contest, and the architect John Russell Pope’s design was chosen for the memorial.…
His presidential campaign paved way for abolitionists and sufrage movements and built plans for reconstruction. Lincoln’s unity created a new sense of freedom, nationalism, and suffrage. Inside the monument, a quote states, “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people, for whom he saved the union. The memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.” Lincoln’s ability to preserve the union and bring about internal change initiated the building of his memorial.…
There’s a lot of planning to do when making a monument. There are public monuments that people see when they go out and see everyday and honored. Public monuments inspire people and get emotionally connected with the people.…
Thus, it is vital to always consider who or what is being revered in a monument, and in doing so, what message is being sent. Oftentimes, memorials and statues display very limited excerpts of history. The well-known "discoverer of America", Christopher Columbus, is a prime example. Source B (Photo) shows a statue of Columbus in Riverside Park, Pennsylvania, but the explorer never actually set foot in North America. What's more, in invading Central and South America, he widely spread disease and directly caused the death of some 90% of the indigenous population.…
Although Memorial of the Cherokee Nation was a failed petition, it deserves recognition. When people hear the word “memorial,” thoughts of celebration or commemoration emerge. In one period of history, the term “memorial became affiliated to the fate…
Monuments are a great way to honor a great person or an important event. Monuments are used all over the place and are marking the history of things. One of my favorite monuments is the Veterans Freedom Flag Monument in Lima, Ohio. Many people think that monuments are pointless but I think they are very meaningful.…
Monument contradictions In Kirk Savage’s “Monument Wars”, he discusses the idea and importance of monuments in Washington D.C. Specially, where they are located, how the idea of having a monument for a particular person or people came to be, and what they stand for politically or historically. Savage discusses the “transition of the national mall” and several monuments in this piece and the opinions that others have had about them. Savage begins the chapter of “Conscience of a Nation” by discussing the national mall and the rise of memorials being built.…
There are multiple beautiful monuments around the world that all represent different people or events in time who may or may not be historical. Although to the people who view the monuments only see the final product the group of people who chose to put it there see all the factors that go into creating that monument and putting it in just the right spot so the person or event can be remembered in a peaceful and respectful environment. When a group or agency is trying to memorialize an event or person by creating monuments there are many factors that go into not only creating the actual monument but making sure the event or person is memorialized correctly. Before brainstorming ways to make the event or person’s legacy come alive an actual…
This is a photograph of the Lincoln Memorial located in Washington D.C. Visiting the Lincoln Memorial was my most memorable part of the trip because of the beautiful view at the top. The Lincoln Memorial was designed by Daniel Chester French and dedicated to the president in 1922. The names of the 36 states that were in the union when Lincoln was president are engraved on top of the monument. Lincoln’s statue is 60 feet wide, 60 feet tall and 74 feet long.…
The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and other iconic national monuments have all been successful in commemorating certain times and figures in history. While these monuments are simple symbols of the United States' past, it required much thought and contemplation of certain factors to make them impactful and appropriate. In the development of a monument, an agency should consider the suggested location and the purpose behind the memorial, because these factors determine the monument’s suitability and efficiency in commemoration. As a vital portion of the commemoration process, the location of a monument determines its relevance and whether or not it will be deemed appropriate. In an online article concerning…
Memorials show how important is for the people to remember the ones that influenced the most in our lives. I was expecting people to be more open with me, I did not get any answer from other than the Mexican family, which makes me think that we tend to open ourselves more when we are talking to someone from our own background. I went to the Lincoln Memorial to get answers to questions I had, but I left the Lincoln Memorial with even more questions: Does the Mirror Lake has any relationship with the famous idea of “throwing a coin and making a wish” and Martin Luther King “I have a dream Speech”? Does culture mentions a limit within the unspoken rules of society?…
