How Many Dynasties? It depends. The word dynasties could mean a lot of things. Amazingly, nobody can make a clear cut number of dynasties, because many questions arise. Was the Han one or two dynasties. Was the Xin really a dynasty, even though it was wedged between the Eastern and the Western Han periods. Were the Three Kingdoms of the same country anymore? The Shun dynasty only lasted a few weeks before the Manchus took over and formed the Qing, so does it count as a dynasty? More questions are always debated, but if you need a number, start answering those questions by yourself. The numbers may vary depending on how you answer those questions. The Name The name “China” derives from the Sanskrit of “Cina”, which derives from the Qin in the Qin Dynasty.
