Being able to be empathetic in an article plays such an important role; when you show empathy you know how the readers feels because you can experience it versus being sympathetic where you can only imagine how the readers feel. Many times in the article the author speaks about how many people are scared, and lists things that black people must do differently to survive. This is not a “Living Black: For Dummies” article, the author makes it an article that speaks volume in saying I’m black too, here’s what we need to do to stay alive. It would be different if this was written by someone on the outside looking in, but this is someone on the inside looking out, who sees the same issues that I see and fears the same terror that I fear. The greatest joy of a writer who is writing and being empathetic in whatever they are writing about is, the audience can not only relate alto more with the writer but there is always a deeper sense of connection that causes you to want to read whatever the author is saying more. Giorgis sets the tone in this article and makes it a very endearing tone. People all around the country can read this article and feel like she’s talking to them all because she is sensibly genuine and empathetic. It’s easy and clear to see that the author is extremely passionate about this issue and that she is not just rambling on, but she knows what she’s talking about. The author did not just base her information off of things that are publicly broadcast- things that we all know about- but she took her time to do research and become properly educated on the topic. The tone of voice that the author portrays in this article is warm, comforting, and supportive even through the tragedies that the article talks about. In this tone, we find someone who is genuinely passionate about what is being talked about. One of the greatest things that the author does is relating herself to the article by speaking from a first person point of view. When the author says, “We’re all we got, so let’s make sure we got each other good.” (Giorgis 18) she gives the best personable relation possible.
