How Long Will They Mourn Me Speech Analysis

The connection between the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur’s is something that the class knew nothing about. Most in the class had listened to their music before, but none had any knowledge about their killings. Alex chose this as his subject for his last speech. He felt it was important because their murders remain unsolved and the two deserve closure for their families. Alex began the speech with lyrics from 2Pac’s song “How Long Will They Mourn Me” to introduce the subject of the murders. Then, he reiterated to his classmates his intention for the speech and why they should care. It was an effective pattern to use because it allowed him to discuss different main points of his topic to demonstrate the connection. Alex as well, implemented good use of the 4 S’s strategy by sign posting at the beginning of each main point, supporting his claims with solid evidence, and summarizing his main points at the conclusion of their respective sections. To conclude his speech, Alex restated his thesis and made sure to make clear once again the main points of his speech to his classmates. He closed his speech with a call-to-action and called upon the FBI to create another taskforce to investigate Biggie and 2Pac’s murder, this time however under the assumption that they function as one. Overall, Alex gave a great speech from the content perspective. He referenced his audience analysis survey in his WIIFM, which demonstrated clearly he kept his audience in mind in the process of writing the speech. Alex chose the best evidence to support his main points, as a lot of it came from direct sources that were around Biggie and 2Pac. However, Alex could have spent more time addressing his opposition that the murders were not connected by bringing up what they may believe and rebutting their
