If an elephant is tuskless, it might have to try really hard to survive. Tusks are used to dig for food and water, to dig up trees and branches and move them around, for self defense and sexual display. Elephants can be tuskless for many reasons, one of them being genetics. If the mother elephant does not have tusks from their genetics or maybe because somebody hunted them for their tusks, then when they have a baby, that elephant might not have tusks. If a mother doesn’t have tusks, there is still a chance for the baby to have them, but they do not always have them. 15% of female elephants and 9% of male elephants are born without tusks.
