For example, if I went to Spain only knowing English and I only knew how to speak basic Spanish phrases, I would not be a polyglot. However, if while I was in Spain, my understanding of Spanish grew to the point where I was fluent and I still could speak English, then I would be a polyglot. It is the border patrols job to monitor the border to ensure that no person sneaks into our country when they are not supposed to. Obviously the people attempting to come in are not from the United States of America and sometimes do not speak English. When they come across an individual like that, the border patrol relies on people who speak both the native English and the language of the person sneaking in to communicate.
Another career that needs multilingual people is an ambassador. It is not always necessary for ambassadors to speak multiple languages, but it always helps. An ambassador has a duty to represent their home country abroad at an embassy. To communicate effectively in the countries that they live in, they must learn their language and become accustomed to speaking both their native language and the local language.
What all the occupations I have listed above have in common is that there would be no reason to be a polyglot if there was only one language to speak. There would be nothing to translate, no language barrier for border patrol officers, and ambassadors would be able to talk without having anything lost in translation. Every facet of international travel, business, and politics would be made easier if there was only one language to speak. In a perfect world there is no need for polyglots, but some traditionalists believe that being multilingual is extremely important.
