Being able to read is a very powerful tool that many people take for granted. In a world where knowledge can correlate with power it is advantageous for one to make reading a frequent hobby. Knowledge correlates with power in many ways. For example a CEO of a company needs to know the ins and the outs of being a leader. It might also benefit him or her to be knowledgeable in his field of trade. The opportunities for getting knowledge are endless and what one can do with that knowledge is up to them. I’m encouraged to read because it makes me more smarter. I feel that being smarter is important so I can learn more about the world and it’s people and more about myself.

Reading to me is comparable to time travel. Anyone can learn from people who were living in different parts of the world, at times when they weren’t even alive. To me this presents incredible opportunities and I have recently started to take advantage of it. Instead of wasting my time on television, I spend on average two or three hours each day reading something. I enjoy reading about history and biographies. I have always been a strong believer that history repeats itself it’s important to know about the past to be successful in the future. Also, by reading biographies I can learn what people, who were already successful, did to better themselves. For example, I read Tim Tebow’s autobiography. Tebow was a successful quarterback and is still a great leader. After reading his autobiography I picked up on many things that he did such as working hard at becoming a good role model on and off the field, or working hard in the weight room. For example, Tebow would always try to be the best at things he could control. After reading about this I started putting more time into showing my teammates that I cared about them and I also began working out harder in the weight room. These things directly impacted my leadership skills throughout high school sports and after that. Would I have had improved my leadership and work ethic without reading? Maybe, but it would have taken a lot longer without learning those lessons. However, I haven’t always felt this way about

I’m not sure exactly why I feel this way; maybe it is because you get to imagine what you are reading and are not bound by the depiction on a screen. I’m not however the first to think this; many prominent figures such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet strongly believe reading makes you a smarter person and gives you power. The power of reading is not only mentioned in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World it is the main focus of Fahrenheit 451 which depicts a dystopian world where all books are burned to keep citizens complacent and powerless. The lessons and insight about life that reading has presented me this year were very interesting and impactful.…

I never intended to be an illegal smuggler. Seriously. But when four-year-old me found out that preschool had "naptimes" (in which apparently nobody napped, making it a waste of time to me), I decided to take matters into my own hands, with drastic measures. The next day, my top-secret contraband came in with me, in the form of a book. At 1:30, while everyone else did whatever preschoolers do during naptime, the book snuck out of its carefully concealed hiding place and I disappeared into its pages.…

As far back as I can remember, reading has always been a tremendous part of my life. Growing up, my mother introduced reading as one of the most important skills I could learn. Throughout my childhood, my entire family constantly incorporated reading into my daily schedule by helping me complete word searches, reading books, or rehearsing the ABC’s. Every night before bed, my mother and I would read a page out of a children’s bible book called Blessings Every Day as opposed to the classic Green Eggs and Ham. Reading has taught me how to exercise my imagination, how to effectively communicate with others, and relieves my stress.…

Literacy has shaped and evolved my life in many different ways over the course of time. As the years went on and I experienced an array of different situations I turned to journaling to help me coop with my life. The informal style of journaling made me feel comfortable to start writing stories and other pieces. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag transitions from being another shallow citizen to someone who knows how to think, someone who acknowledges the world around them and doesn’t live in denial. In the real world, in a society where reading is valued, we read for leisure or for a school assignment or because somebody told us to, but we still read to gain knowledge, and to expand our minds and become deeper and/or better…
