The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead; Same World, Different Stories Not all zombie shows are created equal. Since its debut in 2010, AMC’s The Walking Dead has had great success as a TV show. Showing what life is like for those who survived after the zombie apocalypse, the show follows a central but ever-changing group of people as they fight for their lives every day. After its fifth season came to a close and just before the sixth season began, AMC aired a prequel of the original entitled Fear the Walking Dead. This six-episode season featured new characters and a new setting, but takes place in the same universe as the original show. The Walking Dead takes place primarily in the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, although the characters travel around the southeastern United States in later seasons. This location means that the characters on The Walking Dead are often in secluded areas such as farms or empty highways. Conversely, Fear the Walking Dead takes place in downtown Los Angeles and in a crowded neighborhood just outside the city. This population-dense area provides many different conflicts for those on the show, including blocked highways, rioting, mass amounts of zombies (or “Walkers,” as the show refers to them), and a battle for supplies.
