In the film Casablanca the songs played in Rick’s Cafe have incredible significance both later in the film and outside the film in the real world. When the viewer is first welcomed into the Cafe the song playing is foreshadowing for Rick unexpectedly meet Ilsa in Casablanca, and when Rick first walks into the bar the song playing foretells Ugarte’s future situation. The opening lyrics to “As Time Goes By” are proof that Rick and Ilsa are not meant to be together. This song was obviously chosen to hint at Rick’s running away from his problems. It also tells about his future confrontation with himself and how he has to realize that he has face Ilsa before he can grow as a person. Also when Rick first walks into the bar, after talking to Ugarte Sam and the patrons are singing “Who's got trouble? We’ve got trouble” which points to Ugarte’s imminent death after giving Rick the visas to leave Casablanca that cost a fortune. Out of all of the songs that Sam plays throughout the film possibly the most prominent and most frequent is “As time goes by” which is first played in Casablanca after Ilsa insists that Sam plays it for …show more content…

Another similarity between the two films is the use of music and how it effects emotion. “Emotion characterizes the experience of film, as it does the experience of music” (Cohen 249). In both films, music is played that coincides with particular scenes that make the audience feel a specific emotion. For instance, in Pirate Radio, the song “So Long, Marianne” is played after Carl finds his crush, Marianne, in bed with another man. This song represents Carl’s loss of Marianne to another man, and also makes the audience feel sympathetic towards Carl.…

The song I selected that deals directly with the travesties of war is "Aquarius Goodnights". My interpretation of the song involves Claude (the "Aquarius") who has been deployed into Vietnam and is trying to relay his location to his superiors or anyone that's listening, he comes under fire as he's singing a reprisal of the song "Ain't got no", a song that probably reminds him of his friends back home and a happier time in his life, he comes under fire, and after his last verse we can assume he died. Following these events in the song the tribe is protesting the war at the induction center where new draftees are being briefed. Berger and Sheila call out for Claude who responds with "I'm right here! Like it or not they got me" but he is ignored.…

The 1986 film, The Mission, uses music to enhance the viewer’s emotions and interpretations of the scenes. The film score by Ennio Morricone is so important to the film that it is the main focus of some of the scenes. The dialogue in this film appears to be lacking. In the excerpt of the movie there is very little dialogue and when there is it’s kept short and to the point. The music fills in the long gaps between conversations.…

We all have our favorite movies. We chose them because maybe we can relate to the plot on a personal level, or they take us to a different world on an adventure for a while. In The Breakfast Club, the director John Hughes uses music, dialogue and backstory to bring out the similarities the kids have behind social barriers because he wants people watching to see how no matter how different people seem, we may have more in common than meets the eye. Music plays a big role throughout this classic 1980’s movie. There are two specific scenes that come to mind when I think about music and this movie, and one main song.…

My favorite film is Remember the Titans. The film is about a football team and their struggles with integrating an African American high school and a Caucasian high school. Taking place in Virginia in 1971, the film shows the racial tension of the community using techniques to make it cinematic. One of the ways that allows the viewer to understand the tension in the movie is with camera angles.…

Research Essay Portfolio Task 5 Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story”-1957 is a landmark composition in the development of the American musical and it took many years for the idea to be developed into a musical. They had the idea of writing a deep meaning musical which would show people what real life was all about. The original idea was for a Jewish girl and a Catholic boy to fall in love. This theme however changed when the Puerto Ricans moved into New York and the story line was altered to focus rather on an American-Puerto Rican love story.…

In the track “God Help the Outcasts,” Esmerelda sings a song of prayer, asking God for help. It shows us how helpless and desperate Esmerelda is, how hopelessly trapped she was in the cathedral and how hopeless the situation of the gypsies seems like. The composers made this song into a prayer, metaphorically describing how no one on earth will have helped them. The part of the song where the other characters in the cathedral sing shows how genuine Esmerelda’s prayer is. The others ask for wealth and glory, while all she asks is for freedom, for the oppression of her people to end.…

Fallout Shelter (Scott Peters, 1961) In the beginning of the cold war, it seems that some Americans had a sense of confidence about the war, as can be seen in this excerpt from the song; “I’m not scared/I’m prepared/I’ll be spared” (Peters.) Many people purchased fallout shelters as a means of defense against the possible nuclear war they thought Russia would start, they were designed to protect people from nuclear fallout and have enough supplies in them to typically last a few weeks. While the song is meant to be humorous and confident, it’s clear that people were still afraid if they had even bought a fallout shelter in the first place.…

As a historical drama, it revolves around events that happened in the past. Therefore, the special effects in this movie was not as prominent compared to a sci-fi movie. Most of the tracks included in the soundtrack were written by Alexandre Desplat, a French film composer. As a musician, I would say the most outstanding tracks were by Beethoven even if the movie only included one or two tracks of his work. The background music fit the scenes as perfect as a glove.…
