I observed the Jr. High math teacher Mr. Rix. This is Mr. Rix’s first year at St. Lucy but he been teaching for about 15 years. I observed an 8th grade block class period.

How is the room organized?
This teacher is in a unique situation. He does not have a homeroom instead he travels around from room to room. This means that he has to be extra organized because all his resource materials are at his desk in the art room. I asked him about how he keeps himself organized and he had a few strategies. He uses a cart to help him carry around his materials, he loads the cart up every morning with the material he needs. He has his curriculum organized by grade and each grade is assigned a color of binder. This way he can look his at cart and know if he has his materials for 8th grade, 7th grade, 6th grade. This seem to be an established routine because students came in sat down and began working on their warm-up question. I thought this was a great idea because it helped students focus on the subject matter right away. It also gave the teacher time to set up for the lesson, which is very crucial for this teacher because he does not have a homeroom. Another teaching move I observed was giving time for student to form an answer. He did this by proposing a questions and then instead of asking for an answer immediately he let students discuss the answer in their groups. After a minute he asked the group leader to stand if their group was ready to answer. He then had the group leaders sit down and asked for a volunteer. I like this strategy because it gave students time to formulate their answer and took the stress out of speaking in front of people. I think this is a great strategy because it helps to engage all population. Students that are slower to form their answers have the time they need to think and are able to participate in

We each knew what we were going to say, but the transition from teacher to teacher was a bit awkward at times. By practicing these transitions, we would have been clearer with our directions. This would improve better support for student learning and decrease the silence after we asked questions. Also, I would change the amount of time that I played with my hair. It could have been distracting for the students and conveyed a nervous energy.…

This lesson was a continuation of a lesson that Mrs. Solomon had begun the day before. To open the lesson, Mrs. Solomon talked about the different types of metric measurements and gave examples of their lengths and sizes. Some of these examples Mrs. Solomon simply talked about and others she actually brought in something to represent the size, length, or amount of the measurement. She then asked her students questions about which measurements would be more effective for use in certain situations. Throughout the opening, I noticed that both Andy and Alicia stayed pretty quiet, but as the lesson went on, both students raised their hands along with their classmates and answered the questions correctly.…

This was not a huge topic in classes as it was deemed common sense and that it was, I feel as if just by assuming the teaching role it gave you the power to manage a class. I learned plenty of management techniques from my associate and different techniques were effective for different classes. In one class there was music playing almost all the time and simply by pausing the music it got all the student’s attention and allowed you to give instructions. Another class responded well to a whistle to get their attention to stop the activity. Additionally a great way to speed the class up to get back on task was to say something like “last one to sit in the circle has to do (random exercise)”, it was amazing to see how quick that made some students move.…

Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
