The film Saving Private Ryan will represent what happened on the first day of the D-day invasion but then fail to represent what happened before and after the initial invasion.
Introduction
Paragraph 1 – Planning of D-day invasion
The beginning of the D-day invasion, otherwise known as Operation Overlord, can be dated back to September 1941, after the British evacuated their troops from Dunkirk from Northern France.
Germany had invaded and occupied north-western France in the beginning of May in 1940. In May of 1940 the British were being evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk. America entered the war in December of 1941 and by 1942 they were considering a possible major allied invasion across the English Channel. This possibility would later become a reality when the planning officially began a year later in 1943. The plan was for a cross-channel invasion, the allies left it open as to where they would land, or where they lead the German’s to believe they would land. Over the months before Operation Overlord was set in motion, the allies deceived the german’s by making them believe that their invasion target was Pas-De-Calais, which is the narrowest point between Britain and France, instead of their real target of Normandy. They also lead the german’s to believe that they had other potential targets, one being Norway.
