John Steinbeck describes the American Dream as a goal everyone wants to achieve. Steinbeck paints a gloomy portrait of America in the 1930s. During that time, people were experiencing the Great Depression and caused people to become unemployed. The novella, Of Mice and Men is about two men named George and Lennie on a journey to make their dream a reality while facing countless challenges. Steinbeck reveals that the American Dream is difficult to achieve. George and Lennie worked many jobs to help raise money to buy a plot of land to work on by themselves. They cannot maintain their past jobs due to Lennie’s mental disability. George is Lennie’s caretaker since his aunt passed away and helps him keep their job.
