How Is Snow Beneficial To The Environment

Improved Essays
Many of my classmates have pointed out the cons about snow. I found that snow can be quite beneficial to the environment. A “blanket of snow” provides insulation to the ground and reduces temperature fluctuations in the soil (McDonough). Insulated soil protects the roots of plants (Janssen). Additionally, as the snow melts, it replenishes the water supply by returning the liquid into the ground water system (McDonough). Janssen also argues that a blanketing snow fall enhances “the visibility of some landscape plantings.” Although snow can cause a huge mess for the lives of commuting Americans, snow seems to be essential to the water cycle and overall environment.

The application of color and paint in a piece creates a noticeable surface texture within the work. This surface texture can be used to enhance the general chaos or conversely the straightforwardness of a work. The use of color within the image also has an effect on the overall mood of the painting and the viewer’s perception of the subjects. In Claude Monet’s Grainstacks (Snow Effect) the heavily textured surface of the painting and visibility of the separate brush strokes creates a sense of complexity, which along with the practice of keeping colors separate, adds to the visual depth of an otherwise very plain subject but still enforces the general mood of the painting. On the other hand in Kingstein’s Christ in a Pawn Shop the surface texture…

In Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, symbolism plays a major role in the story. In order for the symbols in his story to “pop” out or show its “shine” Edith Wharton uses symbols that can be found in the story, and even uses the historical background that the symbol may have in society or in myths, for the symbols that appear in the story. In Edith Wharton story Ethan Frome, the symbols that are important in the story and in its plot are the color red, Zeena’s pet cat, Zeena’s best dish which got shattered into millions of pieces, and the white winter snow that falls over Starkfield. You can feel the benefits of the outdoors by seeing, hearing, smelling or feeling it. Several research cases have studied how simply looking outside affects us. Florence Williams explains that “...window studies have examined everything from schools to office buildings to housing projects. They have shown that nature views support increased worker productivity, less job stress, higher academic grades and test scores and less aggression in inner-city residents” (The Nature Fix). This shows that you don’t even need to step foot outside in order to improve your well-being.…
