Scout Finch is the narrator and main protagonist of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout demonstrates the traits of being intelligent, adventurous, courageous, and compassionate. She shows the trait of intelligence by being smartest student in her first grade class. She is able to read well above her grade level and she can write in cursive; while, the other students are just learning. “Scout younder’s been readin’ ever since she was born, and she ain't even started started to school yet.” (Lee, pg. 15, ch. 1) Her being this advanced upsets her teacher, who believes that she undo her advancement in reading by ending her nightly reading sessions with her dad, Atticus. Not only is she intelligent because she can read and write, she is intelligent in the way she handles her problems and how she learns from her own encounters. Scout is trying to prove that Jem is wrong when saying she is becoming more like a girl everyday; because, scout refers to herself as a tomboy. “you’re getting’ more like a girl every day!” (Lee, pg. 102, ch. 6) She is doing this because she wants to show that she is strong enough to hangout with Jem and Dill. Also, scout is adventurous by joining Jem and Dill on their many thrills to solve the mysteries of Boo Radley. For example, scout finds two pieces of gum in a hole outside Boo’s house and takes it home and tries it. This shows her being adventurous because she is willing to take risks and try new
