Rukmani’s true self In the novel Nectar In a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya tells the life story of a strong woman named Rukumani. Throughout her life she faces many unfortunate events. In the novel Rukmani shows that she is a strong woman, by being considerate towards others, not being afraid to express her beliefs and showing her angry side, proving that she is not always perfect when dealing with problems.

Rukmani is considerate of others, Ruku tried not to hurt her husband’s feelings.“There was something in his voice, a pleading, a look on on his face such as a dog has when you are about to kick it.’No,’ I say ‘I am not frightened.It suites me quite well to live here.”’(6). Ruku becomes so angry that she turns violent towards Kunthi. Rukmani finds out that the last bundle of rice is missing she becomes furious with her children, thinking one of them took the rice. “I must know, I shouted. ‘I must know who has done this thing!”(84). That bundle of rice was the last hope Ruku and her family had for food, losing that little bundle of rice meant a lot and she could not bear to have seen it missing.When Rukmani is angry she says harsh and hateful words without thinking. When Roku is shouting at her children, her youngest baby begins to cry and Nathan tries to tell her to comfort the baby, but she does not listen.“See the child, ‘He said frowning. ‘Can you not hear him?He will choke.” Rukmani replies, “So much the better, it will be one mouth less to feed.”(84).
