Prejudice a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. In the novel to kill a mockingbird prejudice is a major problem. A lot of the characters have either opinions on each other or on which morals are right/wrong. There are two characters in particular that have been prejudged in this novel, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. Boo Radley gets prejudged because he stays inside his house and has had a lot of rumours about him going around and Tom Robinson because he is black. Prejudice is not a good thing as Atticus Finch would say ‘to know a person your need to crawl around in their skin’.

The author of to kill a mocking bird Harper-Lee obviously has a negative view of prejudice. She paints a picture of how Tom Robinson is an innocent man and he is getting prejudged because of his black skin. Although in the time period of the trial it would have been very hard to get a fair trial Harper lee shows just how racist and unfair the time period was for the black people. During the 1960’s in southern United States and other parts of the world, a lot of hate had been generated which was directed towards black people because of their skin colour and heritage. Many people and activists, including Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and Medgar Evers were confronted with hate because they were coloured people living in a racially segregated community. Because Atticus was defending a black man, his own family discriminated him, saying he tarnished their family name, the reason being that, although Atticus was not black, he was a social taboo. He associated himself with a black person which was a horrible thing to do during the time, because of racist and prejudice assumptions about black people. This is further evident when Jem and Mrs. Dubose had a conflict between them, as Scout describes ’Jem said softly “She [Mrs. Dubose] said you [Atticus] lawed for niggers and trash.”’ (Lee 138) Atticus was again being discriminated because of his work with Tom Robinson. In addition to this, he is said he worked with trash, which is a prejudice statement, implying that Atticus was and defended scum. Because of the use of the slang term (n-word) and all the prejudice and racist thoughts surrounding that, it is used to treat and isolate Atticus in a negative…

In the novels, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee and The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, they gave us an insight on an imbalance of two communities, leaving one in the dust along with poverty, and the other in the higher class.
