Darcy is the son of a well-established family and the master of the Pemberley Estate. Darcy, like Elizabeth, has a tendency to judge hastily and harshly, and his high place in society makes him overly proud and aware his social status. “He was discovered to be proud; to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance, and being unworthy to be compared with his friend.” His pride results in Elizabeth’s prejudices against him and prevented him from explaining his side in the quarrel between himself and Wickham. During Elizabeth’s time at Netherfield taking care of Jane, Elizabeth manages to make Darcy fall in love with her. Later, in his proposal to Elizabeth at the Collins’s, Darcy’s pride in himself caused him to propose in a rude manner, explaining how unsuitable a match Elizabeth is in status and family. He chooses to focus on the reasons why it is a unsuitable match between the two, rather than focusing on Elizabeth’s positive qualities and why he is in love with her.
