Ever since there has been civilization, there has been archetypes. It is something that has been drilled into the brain as general knowledge. The Natural, the movie version, is written as an epic. The Natural may not be a poem like Beowulf, but the two have so many similarities. In both of the works, the archetypes are self evident.…
Discovery leads to unique renewed perceptions and new understandings, within Jane Harrison’s ‘ Rainbow’s End’ and Gwen Harwood’s ‘ Father and Child’. Harrison and Harwood present Gladys and Dolly from Rainbow’s End and the child and father from Father & Child as characters who convey the aspects of discovery of with the use of both symbolism and other language techniques. Both texts reflect on a feminine and a father and child context using the protagonists. In Rainbow’s…
Horses are subject to varying depictions in All the Pretty Horses. The most archaic portrayal is their representation as tools. To ranchers, horses are a necessity they use them to travel and herd cattle. Yet, horses are also pictured as having a basic emotional similarity as humans; they both experience the primitive emotion of fear. Although, McMurtry also portrays horses by their ability to escape fear when they are free.…
In the article written by Jeremy Rifkin titled “A Change of Heart about Animals,” Rifkin argues that researchers have found that animals are similar to humans, which changes our perspectives of them. He elaborates how the research funded by fast food franchises reveal that pigs require mental and physical stimuli to function and how that caused European countries to change the way they treat pigs. The author extends on the similar emotional and cognitive abilities of animals and humans by demonstrating studies on the conceptual abilities of New Caledonian crows and the language abilities of Koko the gorilla. Rifkin continues to describe how animals have self-awareness and understand when they die, as evidenced by observations of orangutans…
agree with the statement made by Elie Wiesel, “Neutrality helps the oppressor never the oppressed. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” Elie Wiesel is an author of multiple books and one referencing his time in the Holocaust called Night. Later, during the mid 1980s earned the Nobel Peace Prize. One reason why I agree with Elie Wiesel’s statement is how bystanders never felt the need to challenge Hitler’s power.…
Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, once said “In youth, we learn; in age, we understand.” Youth is a time of learning and is most defined as the period after childhood and before adulthood. During youth, there are times of teamwork, but there are times to stand on one’s own self. Short stories send messages to the youth of growing into one’s true self through trials in life. Moreover, protagonists from young adult short stories demonstrate themes of individuality and acting on one’s own self through situations of opposition from others.…
Old Major, who is the elder of the barn, depicts his Marxist views, christened “Animalism,” to the rest of the animals in early March. March, being the beginning of springtime, has several obvious connections to new life and rebirth, such as trees sprouting leaves and flowers blooming. The connection here is the seed of Animalism sprouting and beginning to grow mentally, as shown by the animals several meetings over the three months of spring. June, the beginning of summer, came along, by which time the ideas and philosophies for animal independence had shown full maturity, as do crops which successfully germinate and bury their roots. On one day in June, the animals show their cultivated beliefs and successfully execute their revolution.…
“Herzog, Hal. ‘Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why it’s so hard to think Straight about Animals”. New York, NY, Harper Perennial, 2010. The author suggests that moral incoherence is hardwired into the thinking of our species as a random by-product of evolution.…
Hesse G. Sambaan September 25, 2017 Comp II What’s wrong with the animal rights by Vicki Hearne Vicki Hearne thinks that there is more for animal satisfaction for happiness that is the personal achievement. Animals find happiness in their work that they do that you can call “talent”. She believes that animal right advocates got all it wrong, making some of the animals suffer and they are more concern of arguing than the animal’s happiness. The essay was persuasive, she uses her own knowledge as animal trainer and she proves that the only one who can really define the animal’s happiness is the owner. to clarify her own essays, she also uses her own animals, her experienced, and a lot of examples.…
The Contrast Between Animality and Humanity in The Island of Doctor Moreau and Life of Pi One of the major cultural anxieties that prevails in society is the relationship between humans and animals and the distinction between humanity and animality. Humans are often depicted as being a higher form of animal, most commonly induced by religious practices. However, upon isolation or fear of death, the human thought process tends to revert to what is associated to animal-like behaviour. Humans tend to separate themselves from animal life forms as animals are seen as vicious, brutish and capable of committing acts that humans refrain from. Because of this cultural anxiety, much of literature embodies the ideology of animality and humanity and the…
The PROTAGONIST, the working farm animals, are CHARACTERIZED as dumb, hardworking, persistent, hopeful, and exploited. In this book, an old pig named Old Major enlightened all of the farm animals about a life in the farm without Mr.Jones where all the animals were equal and free. After Old Major’s death, the animals kicked Mr.Jones out of the Manor Farm and changed the farm’s name to “Animal Farm”. Unfortunately for the hard working animals, the pigs gained more knowledge and power than the rest of the animals. There was famine and more deaths upon the hard working animals under the influence of Napoleon.…

INTRODUCTION What is a utopia? A utopia is “an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social conditions are perfect” (Merriam Webster ). It is human nature to desire and dream of living in such a place, where everything is in perfect order with abundant food resources, companions, and equality. Yet, it is also human nature to become self-centered and covetous, which corrupts our minds and leads us to chaos. On this account, achieving a utopic society in the real world is hardly conceivable.…
Animals have a significant part in human’s daily lives. Everyday people overlook the importance the animals have in the lives around the people they care about. This happens in reality and in stories, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is no different. Many characters have interactions with the animals around them; these relationships are not always positive or negative. They can range from friendship, companionship, enemies to antagonistic relationships.…
Major establishes at the beginning that animals’ “lives are miserable, laborious and short” (Animal, 3). The diction sets a depressing tone and foreshadows the theme of dystopia throughout the novel. Major continues by stating that “the very instant that our usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty” (Animal, 3). Orwell’s choice of diction with “slaughtered” and “hideous cruelty” invoke a sense of despondency. The pigs are influenced by Man’s power and history repeats itself.…
