Okonkwo is the main character of the book things fall apart. Okonkwo is a self-made, well respected member of the Umuofia clan. Much of his life is full of fear because he worries that he will become lazy, unable to support his family, and cowardly like his father. Much of Okonkwo’s behavior results from a reactionary desire to be completely unlike his father. Okonkwo attempts to work hard, provide for his family and be masculine in every possible way. Therefore, Okonkwo becomes successful in many ways .He becomes very wealthy, he also holds a high ranking position in the community, He has three wives, and is a strong fighter .He is also an emotional rollercoaster and his fear motivates him to take actions which are unnecessary and destructive. His fear is what makes him murder Ikemefuna, whom he loved, and be emotionally distant from his children which leads him to reject his own son. …show more content…
Okonkwo’s relationship towards his family is completely destroyed. His wives help him with meals and raising his children. Okonkwo justifies his brutal behavior against them because he knows that he is in control of all of them. This sense of ownership is exemplified when Okonkwo takes Ikemefuna’s life. He later starts to have a guilty conscious because killing Ikemefuna
Okonkwo rarely shows aspects of love or intimacy towards his wives because he feels feminine which, is something that is not acceptable for him, however he still does feel the emotions but doesn’t express them. Okonkwo is clearly emotionally unstable; he even lies to Ikemefuna and ends up killing him. But, Okonkwo always controls his emotions when it comes to showing that he is strong. He is also extremely loyal to his tribe making him a man to follow but he is not always in the right. Okonkwo also punishes people without caring if he is doing right or if he is doing
