Scott Fitzgerald all the characters fail to accomplish what they perceive as the American Dream. The novel takes place during the 1920s in New York and is narrated by the character Nick, who is moving from the Midwest to a place called West Egg. He lives across from East Egg, which is where his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom live. When Nick goes over there for dinner one night, we learn that Tom is cheating on Daisy with a woman in New York City named Myrtle.…

“Taking out my handkerchief I wiped from his cheek the remains of the spot of dried lather that had worried me all afternoon” (37?). In the book The Great Gatsby there are many times where the character Nick Carraway has some gay implications. To show this I have chosen the song “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry. This song represents Nick being in closet and still acting on it. Shown by Nick’s night with a feminine man, his habit of third wheeling, and his descriptions of male and female characters.…

The Great Gatsby is a highly symbolic reflection on America in the 1920s, in particular the dissolution of the American dream in an era of unexampled luckiness and material excess. Nick Carraway, the narrator, is one of the few people privileged enough to move into West Egg while having a middle class status. Nick immediately portrays his dislike for the wealthy and spends the majority of the novel divided between acceptance and demoralized view. Gatsby aims to be respected and approved by the people he deems to be his peers by constantly lying and adding to his extravagant lifestyle. His rise into the American dream is damaged with corruption.…

The American Dream ever since has been associated with the idea of success by profit. The fluidity through social classes that American society offers is one of which not many other countries do, so many people attempt to achieve this success by journeying to large cities in America to do so. In The Great Gatsby, by Scott F. Fitzgerald, this migration is shown when both Nick Carraway and James Gatz, both lower class westerners, individually move to West Egg with the aspiration to prosper. The two succeeded in the…

Fitzgerald draws a social commentary on 1920s America and the American Dream as nothing more than a myth. The American Dream was the national ethos that arose from the Declaration of Independence written by the founding father Thomas Jefferson which states that “all men are created equal” and with hard work and determination they can achieve their goals. In the Great Gatsby, we see no characters who have achieved their dream, and the wealth that they have is not from their own hard work. Tom Buchanan, for example, is part of the leisure who has never had to work a day in his life as his family was “enormously rich”.…

Nick Carraway does not get higher position in the society of the East because he carries the Midwestern ideals and characteristics in himself. Nick turns out to be unfit for the society he lives in - wealthy, corrupted, superficial and is some way unreal for him. Tom and Daisy are the perfect examples of Eastern people and Nick describes them as “careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” In this quote, Tom and Daisy represent the society in the East. They are rich and immoral because they always retreat back to their money, superficial and careless, they feel superior to the other people and make them “clean up the mess they[Daisy and Tom] made.”…

Being the narrator and attempting to cope and work with Gatsby, Nick Carraway presented himself to be the most admirable character in the novel. Throughout the plot, he shows his ability to cope with various social situations efficiently. For example, upon settling in East Egg in his new home, he receives an invite to a party by an entire stranger. Bravely, he attends the party, despite not having any previous knowledge of the host other than potentially erroneous rumors such as being a murderer. His aforementioned ability is shown through his mingling and his amiability when first meeting the mysterious Gatsby and other attendees of the party.…
