Nathaniel is introduced in the movie, with a calm demeanor and an understanding of the situation on the frontier. He is loyal to his friends, and is a romantic guide in the forest as he escorts Cora and Alice to the fort while helping them escape the danger of the rebellious war fronts. Nathaniel’s bold character also helps him instruct people where to go, and confident sense of leadership allow others to trust them with their lives. For example, in the movie he tells Cora to stay alive, and he will come find her this is before he has to jump from a waterfall to escape the Huron band. Nathaniel does things for the greater good, as he acts with unexpected actions. In this example, he jumps to save himself from the warriors, but he also gives up being with Cora temporarily knowing he will rescue her later. As Nathaniel helps Alice and Cora escape, he slowly falls in love with Cora as they bond while traveling to the fort together. Nathaniel is smart and not being overly compassionate about Cora in front of Heyward, who is the British officer that wants to marry her. He doesn’t want to create drama, and he has a respect for the officer for caring about a lovely girl. Also, in the movie Nathaniel returns to save the girls after they are captured by the Huron band and he displays a sense of respect to the Huron leader as he negotiates his way through a deal to save his friends. Even though the plan doesn’t work out as Nathaniel wants it to, he shows more respect and honor when he shoots Heyward while he is being burned to put him out of his misery. Nathaniel’s sense of honor is not based on society’s rules because he believes civilization is corrupt but on some higher principal. Nathaniel is acting for the greater good, and helping others as he believes to do the right thing no matter the cost. As Nathaniel makes these heroic decisions, he ultimately gains respect and a sense of honor for himself for saving as many people as he could by doing things for the greater good of his friends and
