Mayella’s mother left her and her siblings in their early lives, therefore Mayella had to raise them. In all honesty, without her father's help. Due to the fact, that he was an alcoholic. Because of this, he abused her constantly. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird Mayella Ewell may seem to portray some power but overall she is not a powerful person.

Their financial status is so low that they live in an old negro cabin. “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what once a negro cabin” (Lee 227). Due to the fact that, the Ewells never done an honest day’s work, they go to school anytime they want, hunt and trap out of game season, and Bob spends his relief check on green whiskey they are not respected nor trusted by the Maycomb community. The only thing that the Ewells get is pity, and pity is most certainly not power. As long as the Ewells continued to not make an effort to improve their social status, it shows that they are just fine with the way they are living. Seeing that the folk of Maycomb are embarrassed by the way the Ewells act puts Mayella pretty far from being
