In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, gives an insightful display of what Salem witch hunts could have been like. Individuals are shown to have the ability to create mass hysteria. The story connects to real life America during the Cold War, 1947 until 1991. During the time Americans were afraid of communism taking over the world and the “Red Scare” began. During this period there were trials accusing Americans, mainly through Holly Wood being accused of communism. The public were so scared that the trials ended up being unfair, similar to Salem witch trials. The American trials were called “McCarthy Trials” since they began by Senator McCarthy gaining knowledge of communist sympathizers. When the witch trials began Marry Warren was an accuser of witchcraft. Marry Warren is an individual who as drawn into the injustice of witch trials. Her views change when Goody Proctor is accused of witch craft. Marry Warren gave Goody Proctor a poppet, “Mary Warren: ‘I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing.’” (Page 1056) the poppet is later to be used against Goody Proctor and make her be a person accused of witchcraft. When Mr. Hale comes to the Proctor’s house he questions then about their faith, when he is going to leave Cheever comes in and wants to arrest Goody Proctor. John Proctor in shock asks why, “Cheever: ‘Why- It’s a needle! Herrick, Herrick, it’s a needle!’ Proctor: ‘And what signifies a needle!’…..Cheever:’ The girl, the Williams girl, Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight, and without word nor warnin’ she falls to the floor. Like a struck beast, he says and screamed a scream that a bull would weep to hear. And he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches in to flesh of her belly, he draw a needle out.’” (Page 1067) Mary Warren gave the poppet to Goody Proctor with a needle in the belly. Goody proctor is taken away from her home. Mary Warren is an individual with her willingness to contribute to the town’s hysteria and the injustice trials against innocent
