In the Lord of the Flies, the boys on the island are young and proper kids from Britain. They are merely school children who have never experienced a tribulation as great as being alone on an isolated island. The boys have only past experiences and knowledge to to figure out a way to survive on the island. Growing up civilized helps the boys to create a structure by which to live and an ordered way of doing things. However, while on the island, the boys experience a loss of innocence while hunting. Hunting brings to boys to a level of savagery that they were not exposed to while in Britain. Without the basic structure of living the world follows today, people would be in a state of chaos. There is a governing body which create rules that people must follow to maintain order in the world. Without this order, people will do whatever they want which create confusion and madness and drive the world to savagery. There are also people of power, but they are check so they don’t have too much have power to make decisions for only the betterment of themselves. The symbol of law and order on the island is the conch. Once it is destroyed, Jack takes over and the only structure they have is destroyed. Hope is also important in civilization. Without hope, there is no reason to follow and rules. The signal fire is the hope the boys had of being rescued. When the glasses are broken, they can no longer start a signal fire and they lose hope. Without these civilized structures the boys turn to evil and savagery. To control evil, civilized structures must be set in place to follow. While on the island the boys set up law in order through the use of the conch.
