How Is Manipulatives Beneficial To Student Learning

Decent Essays
I believe that manipulatives are beneficial to student learning. Young children have a really hard time thinking abstractly, manipulatives give them a visual way to solve problems that their minds are not capable of solving without them. As an adult, who is not very good at math, manipulatives really help me as well. It is hard for many people, whether they be young children or adults to solve a math problem with just a piece of paper. Using manipulatives is also more engaging. Many students find math to be uninteresting or boring, manipulatives make it more interesting and fun to learn. Manipulatives also add an element of real world application. Adults don’t get a worksheet with a word problem on it asking them to find the area or perimeter.

Manipulatives are great for the classroom because they are a form of instructional material and a way to help children visualize while learning mathematics. The materials that are chosen have a significant impact on how well the students learn both cognitively and affectively. Looking at all of the options on the order sheet and thinking about the benefits of them, I believe that I would choose to go with: base ten blocks, unifix cubes, fraction strips, and pattern blocks. Base ten is an essential understanding of mathematics. It is important for students to understand that 10 is a base number and that there are ten 10’s in 100.…

As part of the Mathematics Year 7-10 Syllabus (BOS NSW, 2012), Working Mathematically has become an essential and integral part in all lessons. Working mathematically is a term unique to the Australian Syllabus in which it is used to describe and demonstrate the practical implication of mathematics in real life situations. As described in the syllabus, it includes developing students' knowledge and skills in mathematics through the processes of questioning, applying strategies, communication, reasoning and reflecting. The main rationale behind this is to enhance students' mathematics capabilities through inquiry based learning and problem solving. (BOS NSW, 2012).…

Edin Palmar PHI2010 F 10:00-10:50am Dr. Schuh Ch.1 Introduction 1. Explain some of the benefits a student may gain by studying philosophy. Studying philosophy helps one tackle the question of the “self” in the sense that it makes one really think of why they believe in something or why one does the things they do. This in turn will help us to “think, reason, and evaluate” critically in order to attain wisdom and intelligence, something not easily obtained due to the constant bombardment of the media and outside world around us (Roca and Schuh, 2).However, through the study of philosophy, we will “enhance our ability” to analyze what life will throw at us.…
