Rudra Patel Brown Honors English 9; Block 2 19 April 2024 Phenomenons of Death Death is the most questioned phenomenon. It happens one way or another and in different ways. In the same way, all deaths have interesting similarities. In Lord of the Flies, written by, William Golding, Simon and Piggy, two of the boys stranded on the island, were murdered by the others in similar and different ways. Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys getting stranded on an inhabited island. The boys don’t last long and eventually split up into two groups that are characterised by civilization and savagery. Piggy and Simon were both part of civilization. “The water boiled white and pink over the rock, and when it went, sucking back again, the body of Piggy was gone” (Golding 181). Like Piggy, Simon’s body disappeared into the water after dying. “Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea” (Golding 154). Piggy and Simon both died near the sea that constantly changed tides. When the tide got higher and reached the rock, Piggy’s body was lifted into the water and taken into the sea. Similarly, Simon’s body was lifted into the water fairly quickly, never to be seen again. In conclusion, the bodies floating into the sea are a key similarity leading into the story. Finally, death is shown to be interesting in many ways. This interesting phenomenon occurred many times when the location, reasons, and endpoint of Piggy’s and Simon’s deaths were different and similar. Two of the smartest kids on the island were killed in ways that showed how savage the boys had turned. Without these deaths, the cruelness and savagery of the boys wouldn’t be as understandable. Similarities and differences between the two deaths in the story are key to understanding what William Golding intended to show the
