The beach between the palm terrace and the water was a thin stick, endless apparently, for to Ralph’s left the perspectives of palm and beach and water drew to a point at infinity.” This precisely describes the island as a type of paradise and a parallel to the Garden of Eden, where nothing can go awry and all is perfect. Also, with the typical island persona of long beaches and palm trees as a place of peace and happiness, this imagery signifies the security of being out on the beach and shore of the island, compared to instead being within the forest. Another example of light imagery is Simon’s clearing which is described as a place of serenity where Simon is able to mediate and perceive the true beauty of the island even with all the evil around him. The peaceful clearing is described on page 57 where “He squatted down, parted the leaves and looked out into the clearing. Nothing moved but a pair of gaudy butterflies that danced round each other in the hot air.” The peacefulness of this clearing in the middle of the island shows how if one were to step back from all that was occurring at the time, they could appreciate the purity of the island as it was, not what it became.
