John Proctor is highly respected in Salem. He is noticed for standing out from the crowd because every person in the town is the same besides Proctor. Everyone knows to go to church every Sunday. Proctor doesn’t like Paris because he only talks about Hell and God’s fury instead of Heaven and the good. “Can you speak one minute without we land in Hell again? I am sick of Hell!” (Miller. 1. 633), yells Proctor, angrily. He is respected for standing up to and even defiling a preacher, especially because of Paris’s authority in the town. When Proctor was accused, he didn’t accuse anyone else, unlike many others that were accused. “Danforth: Mr. Proctor. When the Devil came to you did you see Rebecca Nurse in his company? ...come, man, take courage - did you ever see her with the Devil?”(Miller. 4. 734). Proctor replies that he didn’t, and is asked if he ever saw anyone else with the Devil. Again Proctor replies no, showing that even if he did admit to a lie, he didn’t try to take anyone down with him. Proctor signs the confession of being a witch, then Judge Danforth says he will hang it on the church. He takes the sheet back and explains why it doesn’t need to be announced to the town, that the judge’s word will be enough. Proctor realizes he will lose his respect and good name if he gives the confession because the town knows that he is innocent. Now he knows what he has to do, deny being a witch and hang for it.
