How Is Jay Gatsby Selfish

Jay Gatsby appears to be a very mysterious character in “The Great Gatsby”. Even his love for Daisy Buchanan is questionable. It is hard to tell if he really loved Daisy or just loved the idea of Daisy. There is a saying, “When a man is truly in love with a woman, she becomes his weakness”. Even though Gatsby’s life goal seems to be wealth and power in society, his love for Daisy was true. Gatsby wanted to become rich and powerful because he did not want to get along with his unfortunate life. He tried to change himself from his young age but the moment he saw Daisy, he felt something different. He thought that Daisy would not like a guy like him- a guy from nowhere and because he really loved her, he realised that he had to work harder to become the right guy for Daisy. …show more content…
In his mind, Daisy was his queen and he was the king of his own empire. He built that empire for 5 years. Gatsby loved Daisy that his love for her was the empire he had built however she was not the right one to deserve such a thing. He wanted her in his life so much that he never even realised that she could not really come back to him. He wanted to make Daisy happy and let her live the life she belongs to. That is what a man does to the woman he truly loves. He wants her to be his wife and at the same time he thinks of the life he is promising, and the responsibilities he is willing to take for her. No one would want to steal the recent happy life from the person he loves the most so Gatsby decided to carry on with the empire he was building before he met Daisy. In other words, the building of the empire had been already started for his own sake but after Gatsby fell in love with Daisy, he focused on something different- not his own rich and happy life but Daisy’s happiness and their life
