He served throughout the war staying corporal after refusing promotion. He was a brave soldier and he won the ‘Iron Cross’ twice which is highly honorable. Four weeks before the end of the war, he suffered from a gas attack and was [temporarily] blinded.When he learned about Germany’s surrender, he took it as betrayal.
