How Is Guernica Similar

The iconic paintings Guernica and Executions of the Third of May appear to be very different paintings, but yet very similar in numerous ways. These two paintings are similar according to their symbolism, emotion, and art technique; however, despite the similarities, these paintings still have differences such as the art styles, color schemes, and era. Guernica and Executions of the Third of May are paintings that have some similarities and differences that make them recognizable to the modern eye. Guernica was created by Pablo Picasso and depicts a bombing on the city of Guernica caused by the Nazis. The first similarity is the symbolism in both of the paintings. Both paintings symbolize the tragedies of war and death. The authors are trying to show people the devastating disasters of war and how senseless it is. The authors are trying to convey that innocent people should not lose their lives by war they are not involved in. In Guernica, no weapons beside a broken sword are present, allowing the viewer to assume that the people were innocent. Guernica was done in black and white. This gives the viewer a stronger focus to analyze what is happening in the painting. The color scheme gives the painting a gloomy and sad feel, and it also intensifies the drama. Executions of the Third of May is painted in white, yellow, and red. The light colors contrast to the black and brown background giving the people a strong emphasis. These colors give emphasis on the man in the white shirt in the middle about to die.
