Accuracy of “Grey’s Anatomy” and its Effect on Viewers
The influence television shows have on their audience is significant. World-wide popular medical show, Grey’s Anatomy, has been quite the controversy for many on whether or not the effects of the show are beneficial or detrimental to its audience. In hindsight, it has been discovered that this show clearly has an impact on its viewers, while also concluding that most of the time it can be medically accurate. Although there is much debate on how genuine the portrayal of licensed doctors is in comparison to the doctors on the show, Grey’s Anatomy proves to be highly beneficial to its viewers and it carves out the path on what its like to be a fellow surgeon and nurse.

Television shows such as that of Grey’s Anatomy can effectively be used in medical education. Shows like this can be beneficial in helping medical students learn. Medical educators have reported the use of clips, scenes or whole episodes from this show in order to teach topics such as professionalism and communication skills. Grey’s Anatomy demonstrates useful ways of how to correctly carry on successful communication skills, teaching, learning, ethics, professionalism, and interpersonal conflict. Medical-based television dramas and films are exciting and illustrate real-life situations. The show can be put to good use in the teaching of “soft skills” in medicine (Lim 193). Greys anatomy shows scenarios which are thought-provoking, not just because of the astonishing cases featured vividly throughout the show. Each episode is well crafted, interesting, and thought-provoking, thus illustrating a useful purpose to the show in way that many can benefit by through learning from the engaging scenes in order to enhance those individuals pursuing careers in medicine. A research was conducted in order to determine how beneficial Grey’s Anatomy was on medical students and their learning abilities with its potential use in medical education. This results in viewers such as women and other multicultural individuals, to be more willing in pursuing a career in the medical field. Compared to the past when the majority of doctors were mainly white and male, this medical show significantly increases the number of women and other races in pursuing a career in the medicine. Another major milestone that this medical drama illustrates is the portrayal of gay characters in the workplace of the hospital. It was significant to emphasize this because back in the day this was frowned upon and gay individuals were not allowed to express their true sexuality in the workplace environment. Grey’s Anatomy embraces this and depicts these characters expressing their true identity freely and being embraced by acceptance. This is wonderful for the advancement for medicine and in showing the world that women and minorities in race, religion, or sexuality have equal rights as white male doctors.
