Giles Correy and I
“I am asked the question, i am old enough to answer it!” said the sassy Giles Correy from The Crucible when he was interrupted in court. Giles Correy was pressed to death in the Salem witch trials for not admitting/ denying himself as a witch, the only thing he did was call for more weight to be stacked on his body. Giles tends to have an attitude in every scene in the play, when Governor Danforth asked for the name of Giles’s friend whom overheard Putnam telling his daughter to cry witchcraft on another person in Salem. Danforth said that giles would be held in contempt of court, and that’s when giles matter-of-factly responded saying ‘This is merely a trial, the court is not in session.” which got him in trouble because Danforth then said “The court is now in session!”at that ultimately lead to his arrest, which later resulted in him getting accused of witchcraft then hanged. I relate to him because I once too got an attitude when my father tried to question my knowledge on the Tim Burton film Beetlejuice ( keep in mind I have watched the movie almost every day since I was in fourth grade). My dad believed that the main character wore his famous black and white striped suit in almost all the scenes in, when really he actually only wears it for a brief scene in the movie just before the end. I of course had to tell him he was wrong, which led to an argument, and that led to me pulling out google and searching up the different outfits of beetlejuice. My dad got mad because I was talking back so i got sent to my room. Another time I proved to have an attitude is when my father asked me where his towel was and i said ‘I don’t know, it’s not my job to keep track of it,’ and it ended up being in the load of laundry i put in the

As a result, everyone in Salem behaved uniformly with the distress and anxiety of being accused of witchcraft. Likewise, Miller further touches on how cowardice is the dominant trait over the recessive trait of bravery in Salem. This is idea is magnified at the end of the play when Proctor – the innocent -- is accused of witchcraft and is confronted with the arduous task of signing a confession, admitting that he practiced witchcraft. He signs, but refuses to hand over the signed confession to the court, and pridefully declares, “I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another.” (pg. 113).…

The idea of loss of power, however, is carried out to a greater degree through the characters of Mr Proctor and others who were accused of witchcraft. Along with this gain in power and loss of power, abuse of power is explored…
